Resources and Inspiration

Time Lapse

Inspired by submissions from previous years, where the impact of the soundtrack has contributed to the creation of a unique film. 2013 entrants are invited to create a soundtrack that accompanies a time-lapse recording.

A timelapse film is a film where you take a series of photographs focussed on the same subject over a long period of time. When the photographs are linked together, a film is created which has the effect of speeding up time. With time-lapse films you can see time move much faster than normal. "Fast motion" is just as interesting as "slow motion" so think about clouds moving like a fast mass across the sky, or snow covering the ground in seconds. You could show:
  • A plant growing in a couple of minutes
  • A candle burning
  • Cloud formations
  • Sunrise or sunset
  • Water coming to the boil in a transparent kettle or pan
  • An ice cube melting ( use food dye so that you can see the effect clearly)
  • Yourself making a model or doing a jigsaw
  • A drooping plant recovering once given water
  • A white flower stood in coloured water as the die rises up the stem and into the petals.
  • Buns or Yorkshire Puddings rising in an oven
  • Ants creating tunnels
  • Snails moving over a glass surface
  • Decomposing fruit, vegetables, cheese

Equipment you may find useful:

  • A web cam, digital camera or mobile device with a camera
  • Software or an option on the camera to take photographs automatically at pre-set intervals) ie
www.skystudiopro.com (Windows) http://www.boinx.com/istopmotion/mac/ (Mac) Timelapse Camera HD (iPad)
  • A tripod, (or other means of securing the camera in one position)
  • A space that will not be disturbed for the duration of the filming.

Be inspired by a Masterclass

The aim of these classes is to work with industry professionals
and to prepare children and their teachers, parents and TAs in key areas directly related to film making.

Master classes are advertised through the ICT Service Website - See our video record of previous sessions

Storyboarding with Jay Clarke

Jay described and demonstrated the basics of storyboarding and the importance of this work to the film making process.
He drew many images as he explained his craft and used still photos and video from his work with Aardman studios then everyone embarked on creating a storyboard of their own under his guidance - see the results here:

Soundtracking with Jack Maynard

Jack involved the children in simple warm up exercises to attune their ears
then under his direction they collaborated to create a soundtrack to a silent film.

Modelmaking with Jim Parkyn

Jim is a senior model maker at Aardman and he used video, audio and stills to describe and show the work of a modelmaker.
Under Jim’s guidance and support children and adults then set about creating their own versions of Shaun the Sheep to take back to school.

Watch and Listen to the children at work on their models interviewed by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire at Burrowmoor Primary School
